Evolving LAP Mechanisms for Heritage Precincts in Urban Core Areas

This project proposes a Local Area Plan (LAP) to enhance the public realm of Manek Chowk, a historic commercial precinct in Ahmedabad’s Old City. It addresses challenges like overcrowding, unregulated vending, traffic congestion, and poor infrastructure while preserving the area's heritage character. The study integrates stakeholder consultations, case studies from other urban renewal projects, and spatial analysis to develop implementable design interventions. Key proposals include organized vending zones, improved pedestrian infrastructure, strategic traffic management, and heritage-sensitive revitalization strategies. The project presents a phased approach to balance commercial vibrancy with heritage conservation.
